Paisely, mind-altering head trips are at the center of Pink Skin. Neither nostalgic nor sentimental, just inspired by psychedelia: huge sounds, textured feedback, and walls of guitars that surround and make you want to dance or go catatonic with headphones, and IT'S LOUD.

"I wanted to make a record that could take over a room. It's like standing on the beach and letting the waves crash into you… euphoria with a sting," says Hendrix.

Shoegaze is an obvious heir to the disorienting pyschedelic 60's. Bands like The Telescopes and Spacemen 3 journeyed to the center of their minds to make epic records. Others like Ride and Teenage Fanclub went straight for the harmonies of The Byrds. These inspirations created loud, immediate experiences to cause synesthesia! Hendrix's three new songs are written to help you taste color, see sound and feel everything all at once.

I've been intrigued by the psyche of spies for years. How do they wake up to one life, and walk out the door to another, guarding secrets on each side? They have a pardon from their government to commit every crime or sin in the name of national interest. Deceit. Murder. Adultery. Kidnapping... all in a days work. While the days of "cloak and dagger" may have passed with the Cold War, the underside of "intelligence" has not. Last summer's news about Russian agents who had lived in the USA for a decade felt surreal to me. What would it have been like to be their neighbor? But the more I reflected on my fascination, I concluded they are just an amplification of us "normal people". Everyone lives with dualities. Some are just bigger than others.

I began recording "This Dreadful Mess" in the summer of 2009. At the time I was building on a couple of old espionage-themed tunes. As I added new songs a loose story arch emerged: a day in the life of an agent code named, PCOCK. Thus the world's first shoegaze rock opera was born. The story begins with a clue that sets the agent on a journey. He's ultimately ensnared in his own game of cat and mouse and nearly executed. Miraculously he evades death.

I wanted to avoid the cliches of 60's spy twang. In fact, I wanted to make a loud, rock record in the spirit of early 90's British and American shoegaze bands. I started exploring this on Home Demo but think I've found something interesting here. A sound that nods its head to my heroes but still remains my own. Somewhere along the way a little Berlin-era Bowie and Bunnymen crept in and I think it is better for it.

I shot the cover photo when I took a day trip from Berlin to Leipzig, Germany in 2009. It's gear that was used by the Stasi to spy on the citizens of East Germany before the Velvet Revolution. Most of the typography is pulled from redacted CIA documents.

I recorded these songs during the same period of "This Dreadful Mess". Initially I was going to include all of the songs on a single album, but these felt too personal to me, and maybe a little too optimistic to have on an album about goons.

Musically its all over the place. New Order, Berlin-era Bowie, Sparklehorse, a little dubstep, all wrapped up 1993. Guess that's the benefit of having a full century to draw upon. The artwork is an illustration I made from personal photos and NASA images.

The irony of pop songs is that they are so personal, and yet, universal.

These are the first singles from my annual Christmas carol project. They've since been modified, remixed and compiled on the Night Dive EP.

I actually started working on these in 2005 or so. Or at least started working on Silent Night which evolved from a discarded Flannery song. I never finished it, forgot about it, and then rediscovered it after transferring files to a new computer. The only problem was that I had lost the single tracks and only had a rough mix to build upon.

About the same time I had a chord progression I really was into. It became the chorus of two songs, "Golden Heart" on Home Demo 1 and "O Come Emmanuel". I started recording tracks for "Emmanuel" and reworking "Silent Night" eventually sharing a mix of these songs in 2009 and then remixing them again with better bass lines and an abridged E-Bow intro in 2010.

"Little Drummer Boy" was a weekend project. It just kind of happened. It's a soup of influences: Space Needle, Thom Yorke and Fujiya & Miyagi. I figured if the Dandy Warhols had a version, I could too. I used stencil on the artwork because I concluded only a child soldier would be walking around with a drum.

Flannery didn't start as a garage band. We started as a "third bedroom" band. We'd all pile in the room and play as loud as we could. My neighbor would periodically give us a thumbs up from the back yard. Our first drummer was named Sammy. He was completely unreliable, so in the end, Matt Goldman played drums on this recording. We played each song for him once and then he jumped in and recorded — amazing.

I recently found this hilarious press bite from the era: "Formed in 1998 in the unlikely home of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the foursome of Michael Hendrix (vocals, thick guitar), Brian Woodlief (shimmering/noise guitar), Greg Bagby (bass), and Jake Langston (drums) is breaking their regional mold. At times romantic, spooky and explosive, it’s hard to lump them into the expected 70’s rehash rock and country of the area. Citing broad influences, one local journalist coined them, 'surf/psychedelic/brit/emo pop.' "

These songs were a big leap for Flannery. We were finding our voice (I was discovering mine!) somewhere in the midst of bands like Remy Zero, Travis, Blur, Muse and Radiohead. "March of the Bull" has held up and been used as a soundtrack on a few television shows, probably because of Greg's sweet trumpet solos - it's the most commercially successful thing I've ever done. Flannery split about a year and a half after this.

Liner notes:
Longing for the Golden Heart
I still wear Chuck Taylors but somewhere along the way I realized I wore down like their rubber soles.

Joy Sets In
We lived at the foot of a mountain for 10 years and seeing it draped in clouds would lift my spirits. This is probably the only song ever written that uses rigor mortis as a metaphor for an onset of happiness!

Thomas Sings
I believe these are the oldest lyrics on the record coupled with my newest melody. In the late 90's I shared a long weekend with a burgeoning rock band in a New York flat. The Young Turks we're full of youth, passion and some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard. Now that I've written that I hope mine survive your critical ear.

North of Friendly City
I hit a deer on I-75 one evening on my way home from Knoxville. The deer died. My truck was totaled. I didn't have a scratch. Flannery used to play this song every once in a while but I like this version better without the grunge ending.

Flight
The more I travel, the more I like this song. The music is dreamlike and the drums are anxious, reproducing the feeling of drifting through a terminal with jet lag.

Life of Kings
One day I realized my glass of apple juice was a concoction of fruits from seven countries. Then I took stock of all of the food in our fridge… USA, England, India, Mexico, Sweden. That led to a survey of my wardrobe compiled from Asia and Italy. There has never been a time in history when so many of us can live so well. I don't know that our psyches can handle it. We expect comfort and choice everywhere — all the time —and make some really poor decisions because of it.

Eat the Young
I wrote this for my first child in the Spring of 2001 after listening to the news and wondering what the future held for him. I was also reflecting on how he changed my values and interests.

The Infamous Mrs. Noe
A true story about a serial killer set to stripped down Beatle-esque tune. A perfect epilogue to Eat the Young.
